Medical Student Clerkships

West Suburban Family Medicine Center offers a variety of clerkships for third and fourth year medical students.

Family Medicine Inpatient Service (FMS)

  • Duration: Four (4) Weeks
  • Location: West Suburban Medical Center
  • Prerequisites: Clerkship is open to fourth-year medical students. Third-year medical students who have completed a majority of their core clerkships will also be considered.
  • Description: The Family Medicine Service has a primary care inpatient medicine focus. The service is staffed by family medicine residents and is supervised by Family Medicine Residency faculty members. This four-week clerkship includes overnight call assignments.

Perinatal & Child Health Service (MCH) – OB/Pediatrics

  • Duration: Four (4) Weeks
  • Location: West Suburban Medical Center
  • Prerequisites: Clerkship is open to fourth-year medical students. Third-year medical students who have completed a majority of their core clerkships will also be considered.
  • Description: The Perinatal & Child Health Service encompasses a unique holistic model whereby students will work simultaneously with obstetric, newborn, and pediatric patients. This service is staffed by family medicine residents and is supervised by Family Medicine Residency faculty members. Students may have the option to participate in outpatient care in a community health care setting. This four-week clerkship includes overnight call assignments.

Underserved Medicine Clerkship

  • Duration: Four (4) Weeks
  • Location: PCC Community Wellness Center, 14 W. Lake Street, Oak Park, IL
  • Prerequisites: Clerkship is open to fourth-year medical students who have a true interest in the medically underserved patient population.
  • Description: The Underserved Medicine Clerkship encompasses an outpatient setting working with the urban underserved. Students will learn how to work with this population and find how it can be not only manageable, but also rewarding, while providing the opportunity to significantly improve the quality of the lives of these patients. This outpatient clinic is staffed by family medicine residents and is supervised by Family Medicine Residency faculty members.

Osteopathic Family Medicine Outpatient Clerkship

  • Duration: Four (4) – Six (6) Weeks
  • Location: West Suburban Family Medicine Center
  • Prerequisites: Clerkship is open to third- and fourth-year osteopathic medical students.
  • Description: The student will work with Melanie Jessen, D.O. in the outpatient setting, seeing a variety of patients and includes some manipulation. The student will also spend some time in the inpatient setting. No overnight call is required.
