Being born and raised in Chicago, I wanted to stay here for my residency training.   Knowing this, I looked for a program that had a strong curriculum, diverse patient population, commitment to its community, with bonus points if it was an unopposed program.  West Suburban has all of that and more!  I’m beyond excited to be part of this program!

The diverse and underserved patient population to which the residency provides care.  I also felt like I would fit in well with residents and faculty to have a family away from home.  With the opportunity to continue my osteopathic training at a program with strong women’s health training, West Suburban was clearly the right choice.

I knew the rigorous training that West Suburban provides in both inpatient and outpatient care is unmatched!  I am excited for the invaluable opportunity to receive strong training in full spectrum care while still exploring my individual interests within family medicine.  I also really wanted the opportunity to serve a diverse, underserved patient population in my hometown of Chicago.  Most of all, I knew that I would be incredibly lucky to work with the wonderful faculty, staff and residents I met on my interview day.

Viva La Familia:  Community based project which evaluated the efficacy of a student run health education class in changing health ideology and literacy in the Humboldt Park community.

  • High school math teacher in Guatemala before attending medical school

Non-Medical Interests and Hobbies:

I enjoy travelling and exploring new cities in the U.S. and abroad.  I love to be in nature, and frequently seek out camping, hiking, and running adventures.  I also enjoy reading, singing and baking.

Because of its excellent reputation for training residents in full spectrum of family medicine, with a great balance between hospital/ICU medicine and outpatient care.  Even more than that, the faculty and residents at West Suburban are whole-heartedly devoted to serving the West Chicago population and strive to help patients overcome social and economic barriers.  West Suburban is full of inspiring physician mentors who are dedicated to supporting residents and teaching us the wonderful art of Family Medicine.

It has wonderful residents and faculty that feel like family.  West Suburban offers strong and comprehensive training in family medicine, while allowing residents to get further training in the aspects of family medicine that most interest them.  Of course, Oak Park and Chicago are always awesome places to live!

I had the wonderful opportunity to meet some of the people from West Suburban at the AAFP National Conference during my fourth year of medical school.  I was excited to interview at the program after hearing about the mission and the diverse community served by the program.  I had an amazing time during my interview day and everyone at the program was very welcoming.  I quickly knew then that I could call West Suburban my new home!

While rotating at West Suburban and on my interview day I experienced how great the family environment is here.  The full spectrum training and faculty teaching is great and I knew West Sub would challenge me to become a very strong family physician!

I did a fourth year rotation at West Sub and discovered what a gem the program is!  The residents and faculty are motivated and dedicated to underserved medicine.  The community hospital setting offers amazing full-spectrum training, including incredibly strong OB training.  And the location, being in the city where I grew up and attended medical school gives me the opportunity to give back to the community and people that inspired me to go to family medicine.
