At West Suburban Medical Center
Oak Park, Ill./Melrose Park, Ill. – West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park and Westlake Hospital in Melrose Park join their colleagues in healthcare around the country in celebrating National Nurses Week from May 6-12. The theme for National Nurses Week 2014 is “Nurses: Leading the Way.”
The Hospitals are celebrating with a number of activities and events, including raffles, blessings of the hands, ice cream socials, meals and flowers for nurses, guest and educational lectures, and encouraging all employees to show their gratitude to the nursing staff.
“Nurses are on the front lines as providers of direct patient care around the clock, every day of the year,” says Roz Lennon, R.N., M.S., Chief Nursing Officer, West Suburban Medical Center. “The patient is at the center of nursing work. We focus on coordination of care with all the members of the healthcare team and within our role we emphasize education of patients and their families to help keep them well after they leave our care.”
“We are so grateful for the tireless efforts of our nurses in providing high-quality care to our patients,” says Ruth Matthei, R.N., Interim Chief Nursing Officer, Westlake Hospital. “In keeping with the theme of this year’s National Nurses Week, at Westlake we have a group of wonderful nurses who embrace the concept of leadership as it applies to the role of caregiver. Our nurses truly are leaders in patient care.”
National Nurses Week is celebrated annually from May 6, also known as National Nurses Day, through May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. Traditionally, National Nurses Week is devoted to highlighting the diverse ways in which registered nurses, who comprise the largest health care profession, are working to improve health care. From bedside nursing in hospitals and long-term care facilities to the halls of research institutions, state legislatures and Congress, the depth and breadth of the nursing profession is meeting the expanding health care needs of American society.
