The Breast Center located on the Vanguard River Forest Medical Campus, at 420 William Street in River Forest, Illinois, has earned the Breast Imaging Center of Excellence (BICOE) designation by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
“Our ability to diagnose breast cancer in its earliest stages is unmatched in the area and surpasses the national average,” says Julio Rossi, M.D., Medical Director of the Breast Center. “It’s just one of the many reasons why The Breast Center was awarded Center of Excellence status by the American College of Radiology. Every day, our team strives to address every woman’s breast-health needs with an understanding that we are not just caring for the woman’s body, but for the ‘whole woman.’ This respected designation reinforces our commitment to the communities we serve. ”
The Breast Center received this prestigious designation after the Center earned accreditation in the College’s mandatory Mammography Accreditation Program as well as in all of their voluntary, breast-imaging accreditation programs, including stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy. The designation was also awarded based on a rigorous peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists, who are experts in the field, as well as a thorough analysis of the Center’s image quality, personnel qualifications, equipment adequacy, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs. The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety.
The four of the biggest benefits a hospital or health system can see from having a breast imaging center of excellence include:
1. Modality accreditation. Achieving BICOE status puts a gold star not just on a hospital’s mammography but other modalities as well.
2. Enhanced personnel training. Radiologists, physicians, technologists and physicists all require additional training and education in the accredited modalities.
3. Increased research abilities. Physicians within BICOEs are able to peer review colleagues, leading to more dialogue and helpful discussion in breast imaging topics. Additionally, facilities that receive this designation are able to participate in the National Mammography Quality Database for free.
4. Better reputation. Attaining BICOE status shows the level of commitment a facility has to fighting breast disease, a social cause and movement that has grown significantly.
